On Yeu Island, it’s not easy to embark on farming

Published in Reporterre in february 2020.

Lionelle Arnaud is a chicken breeder on Yeu island. Since she announced her project for an organic hen farm, she has experienced great difficulties in getting her installation off the ground. Several things are involved. The lack of agricultural tradition in Yeu when most of the economic activity comes from fishing and tourism. But also the neighbourhood conflicts. Lionelle bore the cost of them. In front of her land, some neighbors decided to make her life hard for fear of noise and smells. Nevertheless, the island of Yeu dreams of a greater food autonomy and the local authorities and associations want to encourage the installation of farmers like Lionelle. This problem also concerns many other French islands.
